Western Astrology: Reading the Tropical Birth Chart

Western astrology is the tradition that interprets a birth chart — a map of the Sun, Moon and planets at your exact moment and place of birth — using the tropical zodiac. It grew out of Hellenistic astrology and reads character and life themes through signs, houses and aspects.

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac anchored to the seasons, while Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac anchored to the fixed stars — today the two differ by roughly 24 degrees. They also diverge in technique: Western practice leans on aspects, transits and psychological interpretation; Vedic practice on nakshatras, dashas and its own yoga combinations.

The tropical zodiac divides the Sun’s yearly path into twelve equal 30° signs starting from the March equinox, which is defined as 0° Aries. Because it is anchored to the equinoxes and solstices, it tracks the cycle of the seasons rather than the visible constellations.

Your big three are your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign (Ascendant). The Sun describes core identity, the Moon your emotional nature, and the rising sign the way you meet the world — and because the Ascendant changes roughly every two hours, the big three require your birth time to calculate.

For a complete birth chart, yes. Planetary sign positions barely change within a day, but the Ascendant and all twelve houses depend on the birth time to within minutes, and the Moon can move up to 13° in a day. Without a time you still get a valid planets-and-aspects reading — just no houses or rising sign.
