What are transits in astrology?
Transits are the ongoing movements of the planets across the sky, measured against the fixed positions in your natal chart. When a transiting planet forms an aspect - a conjunction, square, trine, opposition or sextile - to one of your natal planets or chart angles, it temporarily charges that part of your life, marking the timing of growth, pressure, opportunity or change. This is the single most widely used technique in Western tropical astrology for forecasting and understanding the present moment.
How long a transit lasts depends on the planet: the Moon crosses a natal point in hours, the Sun and Mercury in a day or two, Jupiter's contacts span weeks, while Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto can work a single degree for months to years - which is why the slow outer planets define the major chapters of a life. Timing is governed by the orb: the closer the transiting planet comes to the exact degree of your natal point, the stronger and more precise the effect, peaking at exactness. Because planets turn retrograde, a slow transit often crosses the same natal degree three times - direct, retrograde, then direct again - re-triggering the same theme across several passes before it finally resolves.

Jupiter Transits
Jupiter spends about one year in each sign, bringing expansion, opportunity, optimism and growth to the houses and natal planets it touches. Roughly every 12 years it returns to its natal position - the Jupiter return - opening a fresh cycle of luck and broadened horizons.
Saturn Transits
Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign, demanding structure, maturity, responsibility and hard work wherever it lands. The Saturn return around ages 29-30 (and again near 58-59) is a defining rite of passage that tests your foundations and asks you to rebuild on solid ground.
Uranus Transits

How to read a transit
Orbs and timing
The orb is the angular distance between the transiting planet and the exact aspect. A tight orb marks the exact-hit window when the transit peaks; the wider the orb, the weaker and more diffuse the influence.
Applying vs separating
A transit is applying while the planet is still moving toward exactness, and separating once it has passed. The build-up of an applying transit is the strongest and most charged phase, while a separating transit is already releasing its energy.
Retrogrades and stations
When a planet stations and turns retrograde, it brings a transit back over the same natal degree, creating a three-pass pattern - direct, retrograde, direct. Each pass re-triggers the theme, so the lesson unfolds in stages rather than all at once.
