Navamsa Chart (D9) & Divisional Varga Charts

The navamsa (D9) is used above all for marriage, the spouse and the inner strength of planets. It divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20′, and Parashara ranks it as the most important varga after the birth chart itself: a planet's dignity in D9 shows the real strength behind its rashi-chart position, and the D9 as a whole describes dharma and the second half of life.

Start with three things: the navamsa lagna and its lord, the condition of Venus and the 7th house for marriage, and whether your key birth-chart planets gain or lose dignity in D9. A planet exalted in navamsa delivers more than its rashi sign suggests; one debilitated there delivers less. Then read D9 as a chart in its own right rather than a table of signs.

A vargottama planet occupies the same sign in the birth chart (D1) and in the navamsa (D9). The repetition strengthens it: the planet acts consistently and gives stable results, close to a planet in its own sign. A vargottama lagna similarly steadies the whole chart.

Parashara's standard scheme, the Shodashavarga, contains sixteen divisional charts — from D1 (the rashi chart) through D9 (marriage), D10 (career) and D12 (parents) up to D60 (shashtiamsa, past karma). Smaller classical sets also exist: the Shadvarga of six and the Dashavarga of ten.

No — the birth chart (D1) remains primary and the navamsa refines it. The working rule: the rashi chart shows the promise, the navamsa shows the strength with which that promise is delivered, so every planet must be judged in both. Reading D9 alone, detached from the birth chart, inverts the method.
