The 12 Zodiac Signs in a Birth Chart

How the signs work inside a chart — ruling planets, elements, modalities and polarities in the tropical zodiac

Zodiac signs are 12 equal 30° segments of the ecliptic — the Sun's yearly path. In a birth chart every planet expresses itself through the sign it occupies: signs describe how a planet acts, not what it does. Western astrology reads them in the tropical zodiac, anchored to the equinoxes and the seasons.

What do zodiac signs mean in astrology?

Zodiac signs are 12 equal 30° segments of the ecliptic — the Sun's yearly path. In a birth chart every planet expresses itself through the sign it occupies: signs describe how a planet acts, not what it does. Western astrology reads them in the tropical zodiac, anchored to the equinoxes and the seasons.

Each sign is defined by four structural axes: its ruling planet (Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo…), its element (fire, earth, air or water), its modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable) and its polarity. One of these rulers matters most: the planet ruling your rising sign is your chart ruler — a key that colours your whole chart.

Rulers, Polarities & the Chart Ruler

Tropical Zodiac

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, based on the seasons: 0° Aries always begins at the March equinox. It differs from the sidereal zodiac by roughly 24°.

Elements

Four elements group the signs into triplicities: fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).

Qualities (Modalities)

Three modalities describe how a sign acts: cardinal signs initiate, fixed signs sustain, mutable signs adapt — exactly one of each within every element.

Polarities

The zodiac holds six opposite-sign pairs — Aries–Libra, Taurus–Scorpio, through Virgo–Pisces — sitting 180° apart and balancing each other. Signs also alternate polarity: fire and air signs are yang (masculine, outward), earth and water signs are yin (feminine, receptive).

Frequently asked

Zodiac sign rulers & polarities FAQ

Aries is ruled by Mars, Taurus and Libra by Venus, Gemini and Virgo by Mercury, Cancer by the Moon, Leo by the Sun, Scorpio by Pluto (traditionally Mars), Sagittarius by Jupiter, Capricorn by Saturn, Aquarius by Uranus (traditionally Saturn), and Pisces by Neptune (traditionally Jupiter). The ruling planet colours how its sign expresses itself in a birth chart.

Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign (Ascendant). Find your rising sign — which requires your exact birth time — then take its ruling planet: that planet’s sign, house and aspects describe how your whole chart is steered. A Scorpio rising, for example, has Pluto (traditionally Mars) as chart ruler.

Polarity divides the twelve signs into two groups of six: yang (masculine, active) fire and air signs, and yin (feminine, receptive) earth and water signs. The labels describe the direction of energy — outward or inward — not gender.

The six opposite pairs are Aries–Libra, Taurus–Scorpio, Gemini–Sagittarius, Cancer–Capricorn, Leo–Aquarius and Virgo–Pisces. Opposite signs sit 180° apart, share the same polarity, and describe two ends of one theme — self and other, holding on and letting go, detail and faith.

Because the traditional rulerships were fixed long before Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered. Modern astrology assigned the new planets to Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio while keeping Saturn, Jupiter and Mars as their traditional rulers — most astrologers today read both rulers side by side.

Each sign is a unique pairing of one of four elements (fire, earth, air, water) with one of three modalities (cardinal, fixed, mutable) — 4 × 3 gives exactly twelve combinations. Aries, for instance, is cardinal fire and Taurus fixed earth. That grid, plus the ruling planet, is the structural DNA of every sign.
