How to Read a Kundali Chart: Houses, Planets & Styles

From lagna to navamsa — the Vedic birth chart, explained

A kundali chart is the Vedic birth chart: a sidereal map of the sky at the moment you were born, arranged into 12 houses. This guide walks you through reading one step by step — North Indian vs South Indian chart styles, the 12 houses and their meanings, the nine planets (grahas), and how the rashi chart differs from the navamsa.

What Is a Kundali Chart?

A kundali chart (also spelled kundli chart) maps the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets — the grahas — across the 12 zodiac signs (rashis) and 12 houses (bhavas) at your exact birth moment. Unlike Western astrology, it uses the sidereal zodiac aligned with the fixed stars, most commonly with the Lahiri ayanamsa.

Everything in the chart is anchored by the lagna — the ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. The lagna becomes the 1st house, and the remaining houses follow in whole-sign order, each governing a distinct area of life. Layered on top are the 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) and the divisional charts (vargas) that refine the main map.

North Indian Style

A diamond within a square. The houses stay fixed: the top-center diamond is always the 1st house (lagna), and houses proceed counter-clockwise. The zodiac sign occupying each house is written inside it as a number, so the signs rotate from chart to chart.

South Indian Style

A grid of boxes around an empty center. Here the signs stay fixed: Aries always sits in the same box, and the chart is read clockwise. The lagna is marked with a diagonal stroke in its box, and house numbers are counted onward from it.

Bhavas

The 12 Houses in a Kundli and Their Meanings

Each bhava governs a life area. Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 are kendras (pillars of strength); 1, 5 and 9 are trikonas (fortune); 6, 8 and 12 are dusthanas (challenge).

Navagraha

Planets (Grahas) in the Kundali

Vedic astrology reads nine grahas — seven visible bodies plus the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu.

Surya (Sun)

Soul, vitality, authority, the father. Strong in Aries (exalted), rules Leo.

Chandra (Moon)

Mind, emotions, the mother. The Moon sign (rashi) anchors dashas and nakshatra work.

Mangala (Mars)

Energy, courage, drive, siblings. Its house placement defines Mangal Dosha.

Budha (Mercury)

Intellect, speech, learning, commerce. Fast, adaptable, takes the color of its company.

Guru (Jupiter)

Wisdom, expansion, fortune, children, the teacher. The great benefic of the chart.

Shukra (Venus)

Love, marriage, art, comfort, wealth. Significator of relationships and refinement.

Shani (Saturn)

Discipline, karma, delay, longevity. Slow-moving — its transits (Sade Sati) mark life chapters.

Rahu (North Node)

Ambition, obsession, the foreign and unconventional. A shadow graha with no physical body.

Ketu (South Node)

Detachment, intuition, past karma, moksha. The tail of the eclipse dragon.

Each graha's sign, house, nakshatra and dignity shape how it expresses. Learn more about the nine planets in Vedic astrology and the 27 nakshatras.

The Method

Reading Your Kundali Chart Step by Step

Traditional Jyotish follows a consistent order — from the ascendant outward.

1

Find the Lagna

Locate the ascendant sign — top-center diamond in a North Indian chart, the box with the diagonal stroke in a South Indian chart. This is your 1st house and the lens for everything else.

2

Map the Houses

Count the 12 bhavas from the lagna and note which sign occupies each. Every house lord (the planet ruling that sign) links two areas of life together.

3

Locate the Grahas

See which house and sign each of the nine planets occupies, and its nakshatra. Placement in kendras and trikonas strengthens; dusthanas challenge.

4

Judge Strength & Yogas

Weigh dignity (exaltation, own sign, debilitation), aspects and conjunctions, and look for classical yogas — Raj Yoga, Gaja Kesari, Dhana Yoga and hundreds more.

5

Add Timing with Dashas

The chart shows promise; Vimshottari dasha periods show when it delivers. Cross-check the running mahadasha and current transits (gochara) against the natal chart.

D1 vs D9

Rashi Chart vs Navamsa Chart

The rashi chart (D1) is the main lagna chart — the whole sky divided into 12 signs, showing the outer circumstances of life. The navamsa chart (D9) divides each sign into nine parts and redraws the planets accordingly. Classically it reveals marriage, dharma and the deeper strength of each planet: a graha well-placed in both D1 and D9 (vargottama) is considered especially powerful.

Jyotish uses sixteen such divisional charts (vargas), from D1 to D60 — D10 for career, D7 for children, D24 for education and more. Every AstroCodex kundali includes all sixteen. Explore divisional charts in depth, or see how dasha periods and yogas build on this foundation.

Two Traditions

Is a Kundli the Same as a Birth Chart?

Yes — a kundli is the Vedic birth chart. The systems differ in zodiac, emphasis and technique.

Common Questions

Kundali Chart FAQ

Start at the lagna (ascendant) — it fixes the 1st house. Then map the 12 houses and their sign lords, locate the nine grahas by house, sign and nakshatra, weigh each planet’s dignity and any yogas it forms, and finally layer on Vimshottari dasha periods for timing. Reading in this order keeps the analysis grounded rather than piecemeal.

They show identical data in different layouts. The North Indian chart is a diamond where the houses stay fixed (1st house always top-center) and signs rotate, read counter-clockwise. The South Indian chart is a grid where the signs stay fixed (Aries always in the same box) and the lagna is marked with a diagonal stroke, read clockwise.

The 12 bhavas cover every life area: 1st self, 2nd wealth and speech, 3rd courage and siblings, 4th home and mother, 5th children and intellect, 6th health and enemies, 7th marriage, 8th longevity and transformation, 9th fortune and dharma, 10th career, 11th gains, and 12th losses and liberation. Houses 1, 4, 7, 10 are kendras; 1, 5, 9 are trikonas; 6, 8, 12 are dusthanas.

The lagna chart is the main birth chart (rashi chart or D1) drawn with the ascendant sign in the 1st house. It differs from derived charts like the chandra kundali, which places the Moon sign first, or the navamsa (D9), which subdivides each sign. When people say "kundali" without qualification, they usually mean the lagna chart.

The rashi chart (D1) divides the zodiac into 12 signs and shows the outer circumstances of life. The navamsa (D9) divides each sign into nine parts, redistributing the planets — classically it reveals marriage, dharma and each planet’s deeper strength. A planet in the same sign in both charts (vargottama) is considered especially strong.

Yes — kundli is the Indian term for a birth chart. The practical difference is the system behind it: a kundli uses the sidereal zodiac (aligned with the fixed stars), so placements typically sit about 24 degrees earlier than in a Western tropical chart. The same person can therefore have different Sun signs in the two systems.
